Ấp đảo Thiềng Liềng, nestled in Thạnh An island commune, Cần Giờ district, is approximately 70km away from the city center of Ho Chi Minh City. As a small island surrounded by water on all sides, getting to Thiềng Liềng requires a 5-6 hour journey from the city center, involving various modes of transportation. The final two hours of this journey must be completed by boat. This watercraft is the sole means for residents to travel between the island and the mainland.

Departing from the center of Ho Chi Minh City, tourists can travel to Thiềng Liềng island by bus or motorbike.

• Ho Chi Minh City buses

Starting from the 23/9 Park bus station, passengers can take route 20 to Bình Khánh ferry. Then, after crossing the ferry, wait for bus 90 to Cần Thạnh. The bus will stop at the Cần Thạnh bus station, and from there, it's a short walk to the ferry terminal.

• Motorbike

Ride to Bình Khánh ferry (Nhà Bè district). After the ferry, head to the Cần Thạnh ferry terminal. It's recommended to leave your motorbike at the Cần Thạnh ferry terminal, as bringing it onto the boat to Thiềng Liềng might not be convenient.

Currently, there are 5 trips per day from Cần Thạnh to Thạnh An at 6 am, 9 am, 10:30 am, 2 pm, and 5 pm. The travel time is approximately 1 hour. After spending about 30 minutes in Thạch An, there will be a return trip to Cần Thạnh.

For the boat from Thạnh An to Thiềng Liềng, there are only 2 trips per day and 2 return trips. Including the Thạnh An - Thiềng Liềng trip at 11 am and 4 pm, and the return trip from Thiềng Liềng to Thạnh An at 5 am and 2 pm, with a travel time of about 45 minutes. Therefore, if you intend to explore Thiềng Liềng island, you need to stay overnight to be comfortable with the schedule.

In Thiềng Liềng, there are a total of 216 households, and 70% of them make a living from salt production, while the rest are engaged in fishing. Therefore, the scenery here looks pristine and naturally beautiful. Moreover, there are no restrictions on shooting areas, ideal for those passionate about photography.

In addition, tourists also have the opportunity to learn more about the beauty of salt production here. Admire the vast and pure white salt fields. However, the salt-making season only lasts during the sunny months, so you should choose a suitable time to visit. Thiềng Liềng Island, Cần Giờ, is one of the rare areas that still preserves the traditional salt-making profession in Saigon.

In the evening at Thiềng Liềng, tourists can have many new and interesting experiences. The only entertainment medium for the locals is a small TV. If you visit the island on a Saturday, you will witness the islanders gathering at a house in the neighborhood to sing traditional tunes, enjoy folk songs, and have a few drinks, sharing stories after a week of hard work.

Due to the geographical isolation, the life of the people here is still challenging. Therefore, there are no guesthouses or hotels here. If tourists want to stay overnight, they can contact locals to ask for accommodation or request to stay at schools, health stations, or commune People's Committee offices. The locals are quite relaxed and open-minded, with no discrimination or prejudice.

As mentioned earlier, there aren't many food options available on the island, so it's best to prepare your own food to bring along. There are only a few beverage stalls on the island, and the prices are reasonable. If you're lucky enough to make friends with the locals, they might even treat you to a meal.
