Since the government issued regulations to encourage economic and trade development in Lao Bảo, enterprises and traders participating in business activities in this area have enjoyed certain incentives as per the Vietnamese government's regulations, along with benefits under the special economic development policies for the region.
Until 2008, Lao Bảo Border Gate was officially confirmed by the Prime Minister to be one of the 9 prioritized economic border gate areas. It received comprehensive planning for infrastructure development, regulations, measures, and policies.
The major attraction of this economic zone is undoubtedly its prices. Visitors to Lao Bảo not only enjoy a variety of goods, both imported and exported, but also benefit from more affordable prices as they are exempt from import duties or value-added taxes.

However, you need to note that according to the regulations of the Ministry of Finance, tourists visiting the economic border gate area are only allowed to bring in tax-free imported goods worth no more than 500,000 VND/person/day, except for goods purchased under the tax-free Restricted Goods category. If you exceed this limit, you will have to pay the full import tax, VAT, and special consumption tax (if any) for the excess amount according to the current legal regulations.
